Core Concepts
What is AI Search Visibility?
AI search visibility measures how often and how favorably your brand appears when people ask AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Claude for recommendations.
Unlike traditional SEO where you optimize for Google rankings, AI search visibility is about being mentioned in conversational AI responses. When someone asks "What's the best CRM for startups?" the AI synthesizes information from across the web and recommends specific brands. Your visibility score reflects how often you're one of those recommendations.
Key Metrics
Visibility Score
The percentage of relevant AI conversations where your brand is mentioned. A 40% visibility score means you appear in 4 out of 10 queries for your tracked prompts.
Position
Where you appear in AI recommendations. Position 1 means you're the first brand mentioned; Position 5 means you're listed fifth. Lower is better.
Sentiment
How positively or negatively AI describes your brand. Sentiment scores range from 0-100, with higher scores indicating more favorable language.
Citation Sources
The websites AI platforms reference when forming their recommendations. Understanding which sources get cited helps you prioritize where to focus your content and PR efforts.
What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
GEO is the practice of optimizing your brand's presence in AI-generated responses. While traditional SEO focuses on ranking in search results, GEO focuses on being recommended in AI conversations.
Key differences from SEO:
- Goal:Get mentioned in AI responses, not just rank on page 1
- Content:Answer questions directly, not just target keywords
- Authority:AI weighs source credibility heavily
- Structure:Clear, factual, well-organized content performs better
How AI Platforms Decide What to Recommend
AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity build recommendations by:
- 1Training data — What information exists in their training corpus
- 2Real-time retrieval — Which sources they pull from during search
- 3Source authority — How trustworthy they consider each source
- 4Content relevance — How directly content answers the query
- 5Recency — How up-to-date the information is
PromptAlpha tracks all of these factors to show you exactly why you're appearing (or not appearing) in AI recommendations.
Guides
Setting Up Your First Project
A project in PromptAlpha represents one brand you're tracking. Most users start with their own brand plus 2-3 key competitors.
Step 1: Define Your Brand
Enter your brand name and primary website. PromptAlpha will automatically detect your logo and verify the domain.
Step 2: Add Competitors
Add the competitors you want to track alongside your brand. We recommend starting with your top 3 direct competitors—you can always add more later.
Step 3: Choose Your Prompts
Prompts are the questions your customers ask AI. Examples:
- • "What's the best [your category] for [use case]?"
- • "Compare [your brand] vs [competitor]"
- • "[Your category] recommendations for [audience]"
PromptAlpha suggests high-volume prompts based on your industry, or you can add custom prompts specific to your business.
Step 4: Select AI Models
Choose which AI platforms to track. We recommend starting with:
- • ChatGPT — highest volume
- • Perplexity — growing fast, includes citations
- • Claude — strong in B2B
