# Content Engine Overview

> Create AI-optimized content that earns citations from AI search engines

## What is Content Engine?

Content Engine is PromptAlpha's content creation module that helps you produce articles, listicles, and comparison pages designed to earn citations from AI search engines. Rather than guessing what content to create, Content Engine uses your [Answer Engine Insights](/docs/answer-engine-insights/overview) data to identify exactly where your brand is missing from AI-generated responses — then helps you fill those gaps.

The result is a data-driven content workflow that ties every piece of content you publish back to measurable AI visibility outcomes.

## How It Works

Content Engine follows a five-stage workflow that connects your visibility data to published content and measurable results:

<Steps>
  <Step title="Identify Visibility Gaps">
    Content Engine analyzes your Answer Engine Insights data to surface prompts and topics where your brand has low or no visibility. These gaps represent the highest-impact content opportunities.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Plan Content">
    Use the **Content Calendar** to organize and schedule content around your visibility gaps. Content Engine suggests topics and content types based on the prompts where competitors outrank you.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Generate Content">
    Select a content type — blog post, listicle, or comparison page — and let the AI generate a full draft. Content Engine uses your **Brand Book** settings to match your voice and positioning.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Analyze & Refine">
    Run your existing pages through **Content Analysis** to identify optimization opportunities. Get actionable recommendations for improving AI citation potential on content you have already published.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Track Performance">
    Monitor how your new and optimized content impacts your visibility scores and citation frequency over time. Use the results to refine your strategy.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Content Types

Content Engine supports three content formats, each optimized for different AI search scenarios:

| Content Type         | Best For                                                          | Example                                                       |
| -------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Blog Posts** | In-depth coverage of a topic where your brand has expertise | "How to Build an AI Search Visibility Strategy" |
| **Listicles** | Ranking or roundup queries where AI engines list multiple options | "Top 10 Marketing Analytics Platforms in 2026" |
| **Comparison Pages** | Head-to-head queries where users compare products or services | "PromptAlpha vs. Competitor: AI Visibility Features Compared" |

<Tip>
  Choose your content type based on the prompt structure you are targeting. Listicles work well for "best of" queries, comparison pages for "X vs Y" queries, and blog posts for informational queries.

## Connecting to Answer Engine Insights

Content Engine is powered by data from [Answer Engine Insights](/docs/answer-engine-insights/overview). The connection works in both directions:

* **Insights inform content** — Visibility gaps, competitor citation data, and prompt performance all feed into content suggestions and topic ideation in the Content Calendar.
* **Content impacts insights** — After you publish optimized content, Performance Tracking monitors changes to your visibility scores and citation frequency, closing the feedback loop.

This integration means you never create content in a vacuum. Every article you produce is tied to a specific visibility opportunity, and every result is tracked back to the content that drove it.

<Info>
  To get the most out of Content Engine, ensure you have at least 20 active prompts configured in [Prompts & Topics](/docs/answer-engine-insights/prompts-and-topics). More prompts give the system a richer picture of your visibility landscape.

## Getting Started

Before creating your first piece of content, complete these setup steps:

1. **Configure your Brand Book** — Go to [Settings > Brand Book](/docs/settings/brand-book) and fill in your company description, tone of voice, and key differentiators. Content Engine uses this information to generate content that matches your brand.
2. **Review your visibility data** — Open [Answer Engine Insights](/docs/answer-engine-insights/overview) and familiarize yourself with your current scores, gaps, and competitor positioning.
3. **Open the Content Calendar** — Navigate to **Content Engine > Content Calendar** to see suggested topics based on your visibility data.
